The Federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission issued a finding today that found that the Los Angeles Fire Department violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 when it failed to properly address firefighter Anthony Almeida's complaints of harassment and retaliation.
Almeida, with the assistance of attorneys from Manly, Stewart & Finaldi, reached a settlement with the City of Los Angeles Fire Department through the EEOC's conciliation process, wherein the fire department will:
Pay $494,150 in damages
Provide live anti-harassment training to all fire station chiefs and their subordinate staff, impacting every fire station in the city of Los Angeles
Almeida was being harassed by his co-workers about Almeida's history as a victim of sexual abuse by a preist.
